Fever
Infections often cause fevers. Bacteria or toxins can activate proteins called cytokines that may raise body temperature.
- Seek immediate medical attention if your temperature is 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) or higher, or if it is accompanied by a severe headache or an unusual, worsening rash. The primary way to treat a fever is to diagnose and treat the underlying cause. Over-the-counter medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help reduce a fever. Try to drink plenty of fluids to help bring your temperature down and aid in preventing dehydration.
