Pink eye or red eye (conjunctivitis)
Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, refers to an inflammation or infection on the membrane that covers the white part of the eye. In some cases, conjunctivitis may also be a symptom of something that could have effects beyond the eye, such as an infection resulting from COVID.
- There are multiple types of conjunctivitis. It is usually viral in nature. Your doctor will likely recommend treating the symptoms of conjunctivitis while the virus runs its course. To treat the symptoms of pink eye, your doctor may recommend cleaning your eyelids often throughout the day and avoiding wearing contacts and eye makeup. Artificial tears, lubricating eye drops, and warm compresses may also provide relief. If your conjunctivitis is due to a bacterial, allergic, or chemical exposure-related cause, treatments will vary accordingly.
