Coast Guard Physical

The USCG medical exam, also referred to as a Mariner Medical Certificate (CG-719K) or a Merchant Mariner Medical Certificate, is a relatively routine physical exam. The main purpose is to ensure an applicant is in good health to either be part of a vessel, crew or serve as a member of the US Coast Guard.
  • The physical ability to complete coast guard training requirements (Section A-VI/1 of STCW).
  • Adequate hearing and speech to communicate effectively and detect any audible alarms.
  • Any serious medical condition that prevents the candidate from safely fulfilling duties.
  • Conditions that can be hazardous to safety, or is worsened, by the candidate being at sea.
  • Medications taken that has side effects that will impair judgment, balance or any other requirements for effective and safe performance of routine and emergency duties on board.
