HIV Exposure (PEP)
If you believe you've been exposed to HIV, don't panic. A treatment regimen known as PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) can prevent the virus from taking root in your body. However, time is of the essence, as PEP only works within 72 hours of exposure. Schedule a visit at a Carbon Health as soon as possible.
- Exposure to HIV refers to situations where there is a potential risk of coming into contact with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which can lead to an infection. The primary modes of HIV transmission include unprotected sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal, or oral) with an HIV-positive person, sharing needles or syringes contaminated with HIV-infected blood, receiving blood transfusions or organ/tissue transplants from an HIV-positive donor, and mother-to-child transmission during childbirth or breastfeeding from an HIV-positive mother.
