Common rash symptoms & treatment

A rash is a change in the color and/or texture of the skin. Rashes are often due to inflammation, which can have many different causes, such as contact with an allergen or a virus. Rashes typically leave the skin feeling irritated and can usually be controlled with over the counter medications.

  • Skin redness
  • Blisters on the skin
  • Skin that is scaly or crusty

Because there are many different root causes for a rash, the treatment may be different depending on the type of rash. This is especially so for a rash that is contagious, meaning it can spread to others. However, in general, once a rash is identified, it can be treated with the appropriate topical or oral medication. Although some rashes may go away on their own.

    How can we help you?

How do you identify a rash?

The first signs of a rash usually include skin that is red, irritated, or itchy. However, the best way to identify a rash is to speak to your doctor. They will be able to look at the rash and take a detailed medical history in order to correctly identify the rash, which helps them decide how to treat it.

How do you clear up a rash?

The best way to clear up a rash, is to get properly diagnosed from a physician to determine the cause of the rash. Depending on the type of rash, treatments can be mild such as using topical lotions, or cool cloths. Some rashes may require steroid creams and medications. For rashes that are due to allergies, avoidance of the allergen is one of the most effective long-term treatment plans.

What are the most common skin rashes?

The most common skin rashes include:
    • Allergic-related rash—when exposed to an allergen, can cause red bumps, blisters, or hives
    • Eczema—inflamed, itchy, red, cracked skin
    • Heat rash—either small, burning, red lumps or clear, liquid-filled lumps
    • Intertrigo—a red, or reddish-brown rash, it can also cause oozing sores
    • Poison ivy—extremely itchy, red, blistering rash
    • Viral rash—splotchy, red spots caused by a virus

How can you tell if a rash is serious?

Although many rashes will only cause mild irritation, there are indicators that a rash may be a sign of something more serious and requires immediate medical attention. If you experience a fever with the rash, your rash is widespread (all over the body or in many places), your rash starts to blister, you experience bruise-like lesions, or your rash is circular, you should speak to your doctor right away.

Will a rash go away on its own?

Most times, a rash will go away on its own over a few days. Because most rashes occur because of an irritant, it should clear up after the irritant is no longer there. However it is recommended to see a doctor to determine what type of rash you have to receive proper treatment.

How does Carbon Health virtual care work?

At the time of visit, be sure you're logged in to your Carbon Health account. Your provider can call you from the Carbon Health desktop site or mobile app foriOS or Android.

After introducing themselves, they’ll confirm and review the information submitted during the appointment booking. This will include your chief complaint, symptoms selected, and some overall questions about your current health.

The provider will then create a unique care plan based on your conversation and diagnosis, and send it to you through the app.

    • Summarizes what was discussed
    • Lays out next steps for care or treatment
    • Often provides relevant educational materials
    • May include a link for booking an appointment at clinic near you if needed
    • Includes any prescriptions listed under your care plan, with a convenient ‘Fill’ button next to the list, so you can select your preferred pharmacy.

What if you can't give me a treatment plan or need to see me in person?

We won't charge you for this virtual appointment.

Are you able to prescribe medication and antibiotics?

Yes. If medication is necessary, your prescription will be sent to the pharmacy of your choice immediately after your appointment. Pharmacies usually take about two hours to fill a prescription. We also work with pharmacies that have same-day delivery options.
