It’s crucial to continue to wear a mask when you’re in public. Not only are you protecting yourself but those you may come in contact with while you’re out and about.

Can’t find one?

You don’t have to be a master tailor to construct your own cloth mask. In fact, you don’t need to have any sewing skills at all. All you need is some cloth, scissors, and rubber bands or hair ties. The Center for Disease Control has easy, step-by-step instructions for making your own cloth masks which we referred to when creating this video.

A few things to keep in mind when making your mask:

Keep It Snug: Your face mask should fit snug but comfortably on your face, covering your nose and mouth.

Make it tight, make it right: Secure your mask by tying it behind your head or use ear loops.

Layer your fabric: The more layers you have the less chance that particles carrying the virus will pass through your mask.

Breathe In and Out: Are you able to breathe comfortably? That’s a good thing!

Make a Mask: No Sewing Required

You’ll need:

  • Bandana, old t-shirt, or square cotton cloth (cut approximately 30"x12”)
  • Rubber bands (or hair ties)

Instructions:

  1. Fold the cloth piece in half horizontally.
  2. Then fold the top portion down and the bottom portion up, horizontally.
  3. Take the two bands and slide the cloth piece through them. Make sure the bands are about six inches apart.
  4. Fold the material from both sides into the middle section and tuck into the fabric.
  5. Ta-da! You have a mask!
