Tamiflu is the brand name for oseltamivir, an antiviral medication used to treat flu symptoms such as stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, fever, aches and pains, and fatigue.

Though not a substitute for the flu vaccine, it can lessen the severity of flu symptoms and shorten recovery time by one to two days. It can also help prevent the flu if you’ve been exposed to someone who already has it. Sometimes it is recommended for people with complications or who are at risk for complications, including people hospitalized, people over age 65, pregnant women, young children, and others.

If you are experiencing flu-symptoms, it might be time to stop by your nearest urgent care. Our clinicians will check out your symptoms and find the best course of action for a speedy recovery.

Tamiflu is taken orally, either as a pill or liquid. The drug is known to have side effects, which include nausea and vomiting within the first two days of treatment, as well as stomach pain, headaches, nosebleeds, and fatigue. In some cases, the medication can cause allergic reactions, including skin rashes.

The influenza virus can be dangerous, with potentially severe complications. Young people, in particular, are at higher risk for seizures and confusion due to flu.

We encourage you to keep your immune system strong through exercise and good nutrition and limiting your exposure to those who may have the flu. Talk to us about staying healthy and which flu medication is best for you. (Read “Fight the Flu: It’s Not Too Late to Take Your Shot!”)
