It’s National Nurses Week (May 6–12) and now more than ever it’s so important to show our love and appreciation for these healthcare heroes. Thousands of nurses around the globe are working day in and day out to help stop the spread of COVID-19, often working long hours with limited supplies. Away from their own families and friends, they’re putting their own health on the line to make the world a safer place for us all.

“Nurses are the heart of healthcare.” — Donna Wilk Cardill

This week and every week, we salute and thank you for all you do!

We sat down with two of our Central Support RNs, Pat Gast and Jennifer Vicenzi, to chat about their own healthcare journeys and being a nurse during a global pandemic.

Pat Gast’s mother was the one who inspired her to become a nurse after she ‘wowed’ her Girl Scout troop with her First Aid badge skills. Although her mom wasn’t a nurse herself, she had taken ambulance courses during World War II to help with the war efforts.

Now, Pat is doing her part to fight a different type of war: the war on COVID-19.

“We’re learning more every day about this virus and Carbon is supporting the process of establishing best practices for diagnosis, treatment, community education and limiting further spread,” she says.

She hopes the crisis will change healthcare for the better.

She explains: “Harnessing the capability of technology and adding the compassion of real people is what the future of healthcare can and should be.”

Jennifer Vicenzi always knew she wanted to be a nurse. Her younger brother was born premature and she remembers watching the NICU nurses taking care of him. She knew she wanted to help people someday, too.

Now Jennifer is not only a nurse with Carbon Health, but she recently went back to school to get her midwifery and Women’s Health NP degrees.

Jenn agrees and stresses the importance of keeping up-to-date on all the daily changes that come with a global pandemic.

“This is a time where the public is searching for competent care and correct health information. I love that I get to communicate with patients by answering their health questions, alleviating their worries, and providing up-to-date healthcare with all of the daily changes with COVID-19,” she says.

She loves Carbon Health’s mission to make healthcare accessible to all patients, especially during these trying times.

“I think everyone realizes we are in this together,” she says. “We all have the best intentions for our patients and one another. Also, we have seen such good work done so far that we know we can continue on our path and keep it up!”

Take a minute today to let Jenn, Pat and all the nurses in your life know how much you appreciate them!
